Critter of the Year

I like animals. Not all of them. But there are some I find irresistible. That's why I have created the Critter of the Year award. Every year it seems I take a liking to a new animal. So why not document it and put it on a webpage?

1999: Squid
Squids are really cool. There's even a rubber one in my locker. They have 8 tentacles and 2 extra arms with suckers that they use to capture prey. They also have beaks (and you thought only birds had beaks). The elusive giant squid has never been seen alive and can grow as long as a tennis court! The way to tell an octopus from a squid is that squids usually have firmer bodies. Octopi also have their eyes on the top of thier heads.

2000: Llama
Llamas are more than just spitting machines. True, they spit, but did you know they also make a wide variety of sounds? They can hum, snort, cluck and even scream like a pig! Most llamas can even carry 130 lbs. for 15 miles without even tiring. If you want to hear what kind of sounds they make, you can go to the Llama Question and Answer Page by clicking here

2001: Lemming
Lemmings are totally cute. They usually live in the tundra, and are small and brown with light patches on their backs. An unusual trait about lemming populations is that they go through a cycle of high and low numbers. The population eats a lot then becomes crowded, at which point they march directly to the cliffs and try to march away. They can only swim so far before they drown. After this rapid reduction in life, the lemmings are no longer crowded and can continue too live normally until the cycle begins agian.
